On October 3, 2020, Team Halpin’s – Fishing for a Cure, gathered (socially distanced) in Loyal, WI, to lovingly remember their family member, Dennis Halpin, during Miles for Myeloma last fall. Since the race was virtual, they chose to walk together on the country roads around the house and farm where they grew up. The Halpin Team Fishing for a Cure gathers every year to remember Dennis who was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, before passing away from multiple myeloma over 20 years ago. Other family members who weren’t able to join them at the farm participated from their homes in Kimberly, WI, Wausau, WI, and then all the way in Wallingford, CT.

After the walk, the family gathered at an outdoor location meaningful to them a couple of miles from the farm. Family members each assembled themed baskets to do their own backyard fundraiser. The donations raised from the baskets ($644) were included in their team’s fundraising total. The group enjoyed beverages and individually wrapped snacks all while sharing stories about Dennis and the life he lived.

With Miles for Myeloma event being virtual last year it gave the team a chance to do something special to remember Dennis in the spot where he lived. The family enjoyed the sunny day while making new memories, continuing the family tradition of participating in Miles for Myeloma and creating a new fundraising tradition to help Mission Myeloma.

Team Fishing for a Cure is gearing up for the 2021 Miles for Myeloma event and looks forward to another virtual event this year on October 2nd. Proceeds benefit Mission Myeloma, a non-profit working to help multiple myeloma patients in Wisconsin.
